Before the Jerry Sandusky child-sex abuse scandal rocked Penn State, there were many fans of the football program and alumni of the university who were highly supportive of honoring Joe Paterno in a similar manner as Florida State did with its legendary coach — Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium.

After the scandal emerged in November and grew in the following weeks such talk came to a screeching halt, although, since Paterno’s death in January, the conversation has once again begun to gain at least some traction.  There’s a Facebook page titled “Rename Beaver Stadium after Joe Paterno” as well as a petition created by a Pennsylvania high school student which, as of last week, had garnered more than 57,000 signatures.
